1. Brocolli

2. Anything that resembles a crawdad is your best bet for smallmouths, whether it's a jig with a big craw trailer or just a Carolina- or Texas-rigged soft plastic craw, beCRAWS a healthy, lively crawdad is candy to a bass...

3. you DID specify BAIT...
the VERY best, hands down, is a thumb-size crayfish.

if you're fishing the great lakes, a round goby will be a good second choice. whether or not they are legal, is up to you to find out.
soft plastic ones work well on a jig head.

4. live bait- Crawdad/ craw fish is ur best bet
lure- A medium sized stick bait of a orange to brown coloring
- Poppers will also work very well
