how big should my smallmouth bass lures be? i have cranks ranging from one 3inch crank and alot or 4 inchers and 5 inchers but it includes the bill that makes it dive otherwise the painted main body part would be 3-4 inches and a few 6 inch cranks. not to mention 8 inch slim worms 6 inch senkos and a few 4 inch senkos. will all these work for a smallmouth bass? any recomendations? and how can i possibly cast with a baitcaster with small inline spinners and small cranks? looks hard to do with my cheap baitcaster (its a quantum response 50dallor baitcaster)

Smallmouth Bass Fishing Questions? Hi I live in Door County, Wisconsin. One of the top fish here is the smallmouth bass. Last year I fished for it a lot. I fish off of docks that are very rocky around it. There are a couple large rock formations which I can see bass swimming in. The other day no lure was working so I tried a wacky worm. This worked great and I caught 4 nice sized smallmouth. I am very interested in this fishing technique now. I am wonder what size hook I should use and what color wacky worm. First Time Smallmouth Fishing? Up here in Rhode Island, smallmouth bass were basically wiped out by the intoduction of the largemouth in the last 30 years.... Fishing Dilemma – Need Help!!? I recently took my favorite lure (an old cloudy blue jitterbug) to a local gypsy and had her put some kind of mumbo-jumbo spell or something on it. I told her I specifically want to catch large mouth bass. The spell didn’t work. Whenever I use the lure now I catch nothing but smallmouth bass. Loads of the dang things. I hate smallmouth bass. The lure barely gets wet before there’s a fight over which smallmouth gets to gobble it up. I’ve had them almost jump in the boat chasing the lure as I reel it in. A large mouth couldn't fight his way through the crowd if it wanted to. My problem is, should I go back to the gypsy and ask for my money back or just forget about? I only paid $30 for the spell, but it’s obvious she doesn’t know what she’s doing, so I don’t see any point in giving her a chance to get the spell right. She’d probably just want more money. What really pees me off is my great lure is ruined! What’s your advice, please?

Spinning combo for bass? Around $60? I was wanting a Spinning combo to use for fishing Jig-Head (mostly 1/8oz or 1/4oz) and Grub combination along with 1/8oz and 1/4oz In-Line Spinners, maybe even 3" or 4" Texas-Rigged Stick-Baits (Senko's, Dinger's, etc) and the occasional 1/8oz or 1/4oz Buzzbait. I have heavier set-ups for larger lures but I don't have anything worth a crap for fishing anything under 1/4oz. I've looked at the Shimano Sienna's for $30, which I have a friend that has a Shimano Syncopate which is the same reel as the Sienna just with a quick-fire trigger, and it's extremely smooth and casts great. I'm gonna run 8lb Monofilament, normally Trilene XL on them. Using them for Stream fishing (might get to do some Stream Smallmouth fishing) but also for Lake fishing, targeting mostly Largemouth Bass. If you have any other suggestions for a reel UNDER $35 that is trustworthy and that is some-what smooth, please pitch in. Also I'm looking for a rod to go with it, for fishing those above lures I mentioned. I was wanting something Medium rated for lures down to 1/8oz (NO lighter) and up to about 1/4oz or 3/8oz or maybe even 1/2oz. I've saw the Bass Pro Shops graphite series rods for $25 which fit the bill. Also the Field & Stream rods for $25 fit the bill. If you have any more suggestions, please contribute. Was wanting something 6'6 (prefer 7' for lake fishing but want something shorter so I won't have a lot of trouble in streams) Once again I'm fishing lures from 1/8oz to 1/4oz, using 8lb test, targeting Largemouth's in streams and lakes and also Smallmouth's in streams (occasionally).

I'm going Bass fishing this weekend, I need some advice.? I'll be going fishing on the elk river in MO. I've been bass fishing on lakes countless times , but I'm going fishing on a small clear river wich i've never fished before, its not that large. The water temprature will be 60-65 degress and the air tem will be up to 90 and as far as rain it has been raining all week and there is a slight chance it will rain this weekend so the water level will be up. I'm not sure if the fish are still spawning, I think they are done but not sure.

Picture this! What lure would you be fishing with? Ok, picture this. You're on a partly stained man-made lake in .... Southeastern Kentucky! It's a 710-acre lake, with good populations of bass, walleye & crappie. (Fishing for bass.) The water is medium-depth, with signs of 12-14 inch bass in the shallows, along the shoreline. There isn't much cover for bass, w/ a couple man-made structures for them to hang out. Approximately %60 of the bass being largemouth, with the spotted bass coming 2nd, and the smallmouth bass at third. There's a couple boats out on the spot, creating ripples on the water. Lot's of huge shad & bluegills w/ minnows & crayfish nearly absent. The bass are looking lazy, and you're kind of looking for a reaction bite instead of hunger. 5 lb. bass are not uncommon but, most bass caught are between 14-18 inches, with some brutes heading toward 8 lbs. Soooo ... What lures & equipment would you be a tossin'? Early Spring. Rooster Tail, good lure, got a couple in my tackle box too. I agree bassplayer, that pop-r would be deadly in this place. The Rapala floating minnow would be a choice of mine also. Pucknut, the shad/bluegill skirted spinnerbaits are killer. Nice pick.

new to fresh water fishing, have questions? me and my dad have started to go fishing in the Delaware river and we dont exactly know what were doing. we fish from the bank, so we dont get it out super far. anyway i have a bunch of different kinds of lures and whatnot but i dont really know how to use them. spinning baits: we have like 10 of these spinner baits (look like these http://www.bassclubdigest.org/summer08/products/Rooster-Tail.jpg) now are we just supposed to cast and reel them in, or do we like let them sit out there, or do we let them float down stream? should we cast upstream or down? The next lure i have i dont know what its called but heres a picture http://www.tackletour.com/images/picmgbtlivejig40.jpg mine look like that but smaller, about the length of a pinky finger. i have never used this one but i know it floats, so how do i fish with this bait. "softplastics": i have some of these but dont use them either. do they even catch smallmouth bass, or a different fish. how do i put the hook in. and again, how do i fish with it. i should say that we fish for smallmouth bass and we occasionally catch pickerel

I fish the mississippi, how can I catch walleye? I can catch bluegill and sheephead by the cooler full, rock bass, perch, some catfish and smallmouth, but walleye have always been a problem. Crappie also. any hints on the right time of year, rigs(with a description or where to look), lures, structure, time of the day, etc. I fish between Lansing IA and Dubuque IA. Thankyou

Clearwater River Smallmouth? I fish the Clearwater River In Central ID. It is a fairly fast moving river with a few deep pools. It has very little cover other than rocks and sand. I have a few questions about catching the larger smallies. 1. I mostly fish tubes with a 1/8 to 1/4 oz internal jig head or curly tail with same size ball jig head but I keep hanging up, near as I can tell the jig head is getting wedged between the boulders, I have tried Texas rigs, spinnerbaits, Carolina rigs, plain weedless bass jigs, ect. but they all get hung up too. The fish seem to like the lure touching bottom as the primary forage are craws and sculpins. How can I keep from getting hung up while keeping in contact with the bottom? 2. What kind of structure will I find the bigger ones hiding around? 3. I really like the drop shot rig but the ball sinker gets hung up almost every cast, how can I keep it from getting hung up? Dr. Powdersky-I have tried weightless plastics but they seem to like it on the bottom and the current washes a weightless rig downstream before it can even sink a few feet. as for line I'm using 10lb braid with 8lb flouro leader. the braid is almost as small as my 4lb flouro. The Wormist-I'll have to try that, it makes sense because I use pencil lead clipped to a swivel for steelhead and it don't hang up near as often as the drop shot weight.

Looking for tips on fishing bass in thick weeds/reeds/lillies/weed bottom? Ive been fishing a pond lately that has big fish in it (landed a 16" smallmouth) but is 90% weed bottom (looks like a carpet of weeds that just layers the bottom, so there is a layer of water a couple feet deep between my canoe and the weeds) and Lillies and weeds/reeds the rest. Ive only been able to fish a small shelve of rocks/mud bottom because i dont know how to fish the think stuff.... any tips tricks lure ideas......don'ts?

Is it a good idea to kill off all of my pickerel in my little stream? I have a stream in which smallmouth bass, pickerel, and yellow perch are caught. It's annoying to catch pickerel on bass lures because they're not a good fight, they smell terrible, and they have teeth. Would it be bad if everytime I caught a pickerel, I just killed it so less pickerel would be caught and less pickerel would eat baby bass? Pros vs. cons?

Me and my fishing partner have a pond we've found with a lot of what we believed to be largemouth bass. After reading an article online on spotted bass saying that the spots look just like largemouth but are normally smaller in size and fight like dogs made me start thinking about our pond. The majority of the fish are on average 1.5lb but fight like dogs! We catch them mainly on Red Eye Shads and power worms. The fish we catch on more of a "largemouth" lure like a big bass jig or big spinner bait seem to differ. They are normally bigger, around 2lb and don't fight nearly as hard. So my question is this. Could it be that the pond holds largemouth and spotted bass? It seems we catch them on things normally used for smallmouth but also on bigger lures normally for largemouth. Then the difference in the fight. But I'm beginning to repeat myself lol. So any help would be great. Possibly how to tell the difference for sure not just on opinion. Thank you

what is a good lure to catch bass in a cold water river? i live in springfield ohio and im going fishing in mad river and i know theres smallmouth and some largmouth bass in there. if you dont know anything about the river it is a slow moving cold water river and it never freezes over in the winter im not 100% sure what lure to use any help would be great. thanks!

smallmouth bass fishing? I have fished for bass all my life but i would mostly target largemouth bass. I am going camping up at algonquin and the lake im going to has smallmouth bass. I have alot of smallmouth lures though like spinnerbaits, a plastic craw hooked like a swimbait, crack craws from basspro, tubes and a crawfish colored crankbait. I also have some other lures im not sure that could be used for smallmouths like swimbaits, flukes, plastic toads/frogs,shaky head worms, topwater frogs, poppers, buzzbaits , these large stickbaits and the good old jitterbug i just bought today at bass pro. I know i have the right lures but i just wanted to be sure of any other lures i can use for smallmouths that i already have. Any other lures you would recommend? Thanks! in fact, i bought a walleye kit a while ago so i have a ton of grubs and jigheads! Well i wouldn't say state, more like province as i live in Canada- ontario to be exact. Algonquin provincial park would be central ontario. ok then, can i use my buzzbaits? Wacky worming? Thanks!
