striped bass fishing tips Knowledge Base

When fishing for bluefish and striped bass? What is a preffered LURE. Not bait. However, are clams a good bait for either of these fish? If so, do you rest it on the bottom or float it somewhere in the middle? And throw in any other tips you have :)
What's the best way to cook fresh caught striped bass? A friend of mine had a big catch of striped bass and gave me a huge piece...it's over an inch thick and prob more than a foot long. What seasonings should I use? Can it be cooked on a BBQ grill or should it be broiled or baked in an oven? How long will it take and at what temp should it be cooked? Also how will I know when it's done? I'm clueless about cooking this type of fish. I don't want to waste it. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!
Catching Striped bass? (NJ)? When, where, and how can i catch striped bass on the jersey shore. Any tips for setting the hook and bait presentation? Also when is the best time of year to fish for them and what party boats are the best and most productive for stripers?

When fishing with clams...? Especially for striped bass and bluefish, do you float the clams at a certain depth in the water, or just let it rest on the bottom? And throw in any other tips you have :)

Striped Bass And Blue Fish Fishing In The Rain? I'm going to the Chesapeake Bay next week to go fishing. I fish from the shore (as I don't own a boat or anything) and instead of sticking with the same old perch, spot fish, sting rays, and small rock fish and blue fish, I'd like to try for the big ones. It's suppose to rain though.. Will that effect my fishing, especially since I'm on the shore (regardless of me fishing during high tide)? Any tips? Thank you!

I'm going fishing this weekend on a boat. I need tips? Okay so in Howard Beach, Queens, NY. I'm going on a night fishing trip on the NorthStar II from 7 pm - 12 am. this Saturday. We are seeking for Striped Bass. I know somewhat about fishing. The boat supplies the rod, reel, tackle, bait. What I need help with is what side of the boat should my family fish on? The front, back, sides? Also if i get a bite, set the hook, and start reeling in the fish. What if the line is about to break, etc? I need some tips. The north star is the name of the boat i'm going on.I fished on the back of the boat before and our lines got stuck to the motor a lot. The way we will be fishing is. Let the line go down deeper into the water. Not casting.
What went wrong today fishing? Okay I'm seriously bummed out because this is the third time my family and I have gone on a party charter fishing boat in Howard Beach, Queens, NY and we caught absolutely NOTHING. Today we went on the Northstar II for night fishing for striped bass from 7 pm - 12 am. We went various places from raritan bay, jamaica bay, and rockaways. The captain stopped the boat and we drifted. The setup was a 5 oz sinker with a hook with worms. We let it go to the bottom and occasionally lift the rod tip up and down as the mates told us to do. Nobody out of the 20 people on the charter boat caught anything. What happened? I mean all 3 times we went fishing? Not only on this boat but other party boats in NY as well. We fished on the side of the boat. We felt a few bites but nothing after trying to set the hook. We see on the websites people catching all sorts of huge striped bass, bluefish, weakfish. Now I'm thinking it's FAKE because nobody caught anything. This is bullsh*t. Anybody have an explanation?

I need tips on fishing bass? I'm a total fishing noob but I do enjoy fishing. There's a small lake near my home and I go to it every once and a while. The problem is I hardly ever catch anything! In the last like 6 trips that I've gone, I've caught maybe 6 fish but they were all little hybrid striped bass. the biggest one was about 14 inches. What am I doing wrong? What I do first is throw my net out and catch shad to use as bait. Next, I use my open face pole and cast it as far as I can cast it. Another problem with this is that it only goes about 50 feet maximum from where I cast and I cast from the shore so that's a big problem. I'm physically fit so I think it's a technique problem. If you have any tips, I'd like to have them.
What Topwater Lure For Striped Bass Would You Recommend? I fish in the backyard of our "beach house" (inshore) It's not really near the beach, but right behind it is the Chesapeake Bay (I'm not complaining!) Just a random question, but will a topwater lure for striped bass work for bluefish as well? Any tips would be appreciated! Thank you!
what size penn battle and what is a good rod to go with it for striped bass? i am looking to buy a penn battle reel for fishing this summer, i want it mainly for striped bass but want to occasionally use it for fluke. i will be fishing out of a boat so im not looking for surf casting set ups. any tips for what size reel and rod i should get?
Bay Fishing Problems? I cant seem to catch any striped bass or weakfish in the back bays. Ive used spearing, bunker chunks and even fished a little at night. People say you can catch bass in the bays but I have been trying for 2 years during the summer with no results. I have caught snappers bluefish and small flounder. I guess either there arent any striped bass or weakfish or many im doing something wrong. Any tips or opinons would be great thanks. Barnegat Bay NJ back bays
Fishing from the surf and why people use such different methods? Okay this is ONLY. fishing from the surf/jetties/pier. No BOAT FISHING Now i've been fishing with my dad A LONG time. And we always fish from the rocks or a pier. And this is all people seem to use. Big freaking fishing rods and a HIGH LOW RIG. Back in the day everybody used J hooks. now ppl use Circle hooks. and for Bluefish we use Steel wire leaded J hooks. And i fish in the Chespeake bay. So all we catch are, bluefish, striped bass, craoker, spot. and thats all i ever see being caught. Nothing else. other than blowfish and rays/skates And this is the only bait i've ever use and SEEN being used. raw shrimp, cooked shrimp, cut spot, blood worms, squid. That is it. Now my questoin is. whenever i go to some fishing forum. WOndering what in the hell do these people talk about all day. I mean u just get a 12 ft rod. chuck 6oz n bait. and let it sit. till u hear the bell jingle or the glow in the dark tips bobble. so i snoop about and these people are talking about all sorts of rigs blah blah. whats the difference beween a fish finder and a high low rig???? my high low rig is on the same freaking depth ur fish finder is at. and whats with all this artifuical junk? Most fish follow the scent of the blood worm or cut spot. i doubt they can see your artificial lure in the middle of the night anyways. Who the heck uses artificl lures for the surf? i've never seen it in my entire life at Point lookout or Sandy Point State park or Choptank. Ive never seen flies, spinners, bobbers, poppers. None of that Bull crap. thats all for the dinky ponds. I just don't get it. And even if u wanted to go jigging. The big fish are far out. those gotcha plugs and crap all weight 1oz. u can't chuck that stuff worth sh1t. And those 12 ft rods are heavy and nobody wants to be bobbling a 12 ft rod up and down for 6 hrs into the middle of the night. And its not like during the night us fisherman can see where the fish are. Or even during the day and i dobut most of us could even cast that far. And how skilled u must be to find those things in the water probably takes years. I mean and yet these guys fishing from the surf keep using fake lures, fake baits. fake everything. and somehow catch huge ginorimous fish. i just don't understand. Someone care to explain?
Any tips on fishing for bass ,blue fish or striped bass on long island Ny ? I've been fishing a few times already with my friends and we babbyyy caught anything but a lousy red robin. We've been to the north shores and south shores on long island with no luck. We usually fish with poppers, diamond jigs and bucktails . The one time we caught that red robin was with menhaden bait ( bunker) . We've actually seen blue fish or bass flopping out of the water one time and they were pretty decent sized but were unable to catch anything . We are beginners and wondering what we are doing wrong . Places we have been to are Robert Moses beach , wading river , and a few other spots on south shore. We get really frustrated because just the other day at Robert Moses someone caught about 30" striped bass in the same waters we were in . We usually go around sunrise about 4-7am. Any tips would greatly be appreciated .
