Fishing Gear Setup Florida Red/Sheaphead from Kayak? So I am getting back into fishing after about 15 years. I have a kayak I will be fishing from, Malibu Stealth 14 and I'm 6 foot tall. I live on the Gulf Coast of Florida and plan on fishing the flats. Redfish and sheapshead will be my main goal. Maybe some flounder if possible, and some snook here and there. What I am looking for is some setup advice. I hear Ugly stick is one of the better rods out there now. But would love to hear peoples opinions. I have around $125 to spend on a pole and reel. I know it is not a lot, as some setups I hear people spending $300+ on the rod/reel alone. It would be nice if I could get two combos for the $125. Besides shrimp and other live bait, what are some good artificial lures to use? What is the the recommendation for fishing line?
What equipment do I need to get started kayak fishing? I am living in Northeast Florida and am trying to get started kayak fishing. I need to know, besides a kayak of course, what type of equipment is necessary and essential to get started and be successful at kayak fishing.
Florida Fishing gear for my mom, where can I find what she needs? Ok, mom goes to Bokeelia Florida, (Pine Island area) and takes a kayak out and goes fishing.. she loves it.. talks about certain lures etc etc... and I have NO knowledge of any of this. Christmas time is just around the corner so am wondering if I were to come up with a gift pack, what good lures would she need? Any neat products or tools she could use while in a kayak... she often talkes about the types of fish she catches, but I can only remember something about a snook.. LOL Please help! I'm looking for something special either lures, products, helpful tools, or even an online store where I could get a gift certificate so she could buy what she needs when shes down south. Please help! Christmas isnt that far away! Oh.. things to know.. she ONLY fishes in Florida, from a kayak and sometimes with friends in a boat... but mostly in a kayak...
What is a good fishing kayak for someone that is 6'5? Also are there any tandem fishing kayaks? The places I would like to try and do some ocean fishing in the Volusia county, Florida area where the waves aren't really that bad from what i hear. Also, something that wouldn't be too much of a hassle if I would go by myself as well. I am new to the whole thing and any incite would be greatly appreciated. I plan on catch and release if that matters at all. The more basic the model ( i.e. cheaper) would be nice. Maybe something I can upgrade down the road as well if I get into it more. I dont plan on going far out into ocean just to clarify most likely in the delta. Also I am set on kayak not canoe just for the fact easier to transport on top of my car, as well as easier for me to do solo.

Going to the St. Joseph Bay Area in Florida tonite, suggestions please? I'm going to Cape San Blas, visiting Mexico Beach, Panama City and possibly Tallahassee. Aside from scuba diving, horse back riding on the beach, kayaking, fishing...what other interesting things are there to do? Also how common are shark attacks in that area? Any other beach predators like jelly fish? Tips? Good restaurants? (specially cuban food... never had it) Anything you can think of to make this an unforgettable vacation ^^

What's a good camping spot in Florida for a bunch of young guys? Me and my group of friends just graduated from high school, and we want to go on a camping trip (tents not RV) at the end of this month. We live in south florida would like to go away up north for maybe 4-5 days. Now then, we're all interested in finding a spot where we can rough it but not be completely boondocking. Somewhere we can go fishing, kayaking, hiking, etc. I'm currently searching but I'm not too sure how to go about looking. So if anyone can help or share personal experiences it'd be greatly appreciated.

How pheasable would a trip along the east coast of US be in a kayak? Basically I have been thinking a lot lately about doing this, I regularly go several miles out in the ocean fishing out of my kayak. And have been thinking about just taking off one day along the coast towards a destination of florida. (from delaware) So in your opinions the average cost of the trip would be, wanting to penny pinch as much as possible. Water and rice wouldn't bother me one bit. As I'm an avid fisherman and could easily get a fish here and there for extra protein. Also, I have a sail rig constructed for my kayak that would assist me in my journey. That being said, Looking for some opinions on this idea.
Who else is loving this global warming?!? I am loving this global warming! Here in southwest Michigan it is gona be 55 degree's! With the exception of losing the ice fishing season, this is great! You can find me in my kayak fishing Friday evening! Hell, in a couple of years we may be sunbathing on Lake Michigan Beaches! No more traveling to Florida for fun in the sun! I call on all people who are in favor of global warming to buy 10 cans of hairspray and at the stroke of midnight, start spraying!!Happy New Year to all!!! relax Matt S. Go take a ride in your suv. If you use a computer or drive a car your as guilty as anyone. I rode my bike and kayaked more yesterday then you have your whole life! I should be the one mad at you! But I'm not. Please buy some hairspray and help me improve the quality of life for all people who hate winter! Sorry skiers, I ski also, but it will be on water for now on. Sorry.
What are some great things to do in cocoa beach? I am going to cocoa beach florida for my senior spring break. We want to have a few ideas to do some things some of the days. we are already planning on going kayaking. we aren't interested in fishing or the space station. can anyone help??
I am looking for a good kayak. Any help? Okay. So I want a sit on top kayak for sure. I mostly go kayaking river and inner coastal waters of Florida. I do tend to go out on the beach with kayaks too. Ride waves with it. One thing that I definitely need is a good amount of dry storage space, because I bring my Nikon D200 with me everywhere (in a waterproof case, of course), and need to be able to feel fairly comfortable that it is there. And lastly I want to be able to maybe fish on it occasionally. Thanks for your help! I have actually seen many kayakers with cameras. I personally have been using my friends SOT for the past 4 years. I think as far as experience goes... I have enough of it.
Wondering if anyone knows what species of eel I caught in South Florida? My buddy caught an eel while fishing in North Miami in a Kayak in brackish water. We were catching tarpon all day, and all of a sudden he reeled in what looked to be half barracuda and half eel. The teeth were huge and sharp, however the eel itself didn't look anything like a moray. The head looked about the same as a barracuda's head. It was a silver color with a thin body which seemed to be about 3 to 3.5 feet long. I searched the internet, and can't find any place which has a picture of the eel we caught. Any information would be helpful.....
Southern bank, wading, kayak fishers, you know what time of year it is? Yep, it's spring, and the gators are doing their things. If they're not pairing up and getting territorial where you're at now, they will be soon. My father's our local nuisance alligator trapper for the State, and I can tell you east central Florida is really waking up as far as the dinosaurs go What does this mean to you? It means it's time to start watching your steps, alligators lazing in the sun after a cold front don't want to get back into the water, it's cold, and they're cold and they can't warm themselves up. They're sluggish, they're moody, and the males will be looking for girlfriends any time now. Just like the fish are looking for warm spots in the water, so are the gators, and trust me, they're in salt, too, and they'll look just like a barnacled log or something until you're right on top of them. They're also hungry... they probably haven't eaten much or at all for a few months. Catch and release is a great thing when done correctly, but I've watched people unhook fish, flop them in the water, and a gator comes up to take advantage of the wounded fish. Make sure you take the time to make sure the fish is alright before letting it go. Trash fish... just cuz you don't want it, don't mean Mr. Gator doesn't, I watch people kill "trash" fish and leave them on the bank. After they're gone, here comes Mr. Gator to clean up the mess. This is incidental feeding, it decreases their natural fear of humans just as much as directly throwing them bread or whatever. 95% of alligator attacks in Florida are linked to feeding and enticement..... sooooo..... refrain from taunting or throwing rocks, etc. as well, please. Also, little gators following your lure in, are NOT attacking you. Little gator is just as interested in topwater as bass or anything else are... -more- If you happen to hook a gator, reel it in where it doesn't have a long line coming out of it's mouth, but not so close that you're putting your hands in danger and cut it loose, if it's a big gator, just cut it off, unless you're using huge weight test line, it won't cause the gator any damage. Lures and hooks will work their way out, I've seen gators with as many as a dozen catfish spines in the roof of their mouths, a hook won't hurt them that bad. If a gator's following you around while fishing and acting aggressive or bold, please be safe and contact your state wildlife commission to bring it to their attention, especially if it is in an area that would pose a danger to children or pets. It's bad enough when people can't read no swimming signs or decide to get trashed and go swimming, but when it happens to a kid........ Anyway, just wanted to remind everyone, and let those who don't know about alligators who may be fishing in their habitat what's up.
I Need SERIOUS Help On Falconry In Florida? My name is Sean and I am 16 years old. I have 2 main questions about falconry in Florida I am an animal lover and love to do stuff outside. How do you set the hook when using a float( click clacker) on the grass flats? Hi, i've been having alot of trouble as of late setting the hook with the click clacker bobber/float on the grass flats.I've tired the usual reaction hook set and pausing for 2,3 or 5 seconds. We prob hook about 15-20 fish amoungst the 3 of us but usually bring in about 2-3. Im an experienced (but not very good) angler, im just wondering if anyone with a little more experience under their belt has any tips about setting the hooks on reds and sea trout or any other tips for that matter. I fish the the Florida gulf coast (cedar key) form a kayak. thanks
Which Caribbean Resort would you recommend and why? We are looking to get away for some fun and relaxation sometime around the end of the year. Our budget is about $3000 and we're flying out of north florida. We have no kids. We love the beach. We only snorkel, and if at all possible we would like to access a house reef right off the resort beach. This is not a must, but we definitely want a nice clean and not too crowded beach. We would also like to do some fishing, maybe kayaking and hanging out by the pool with a view of the Caribbean. I've been looking and there are so many places to choose from. Thanks for your recommendations.
Getting married in 6 weeks, Honeymoon ideas?!?!? I know this is a little last minute but we're getting married in 6 weeks and need honeymoon ideas! We were planning on going to St Thomas but recently decided that might be too boring. We're not really fishing/snorkling/kayaking kinda people. More interested in amusement parks, museums, etc. We went to Niagara Falls Canada a few years ago and loved it. Loved how everything was so close together, tourist friendly, lots of different things to see and do. So basically we're looking for something like that. Possibly Florida but not necessarily the whole Disney thing. We're in our 30s and not really into clubbing or anything like that, but we do like to have a drink here and there at a cool sports bar or something. Any ideas from anyone?? Thanks
Does anyone know the best places to live in the country for outdoor activities and recreation? They are always in the mountains where you can fish for trout, kayak, canoe, white water rafting, theme parks, water parks, camping, snow skiing, horse back riding, hiking, water skiing and atv riding. There might be some argument for living in Florida, but who wants the heat. The problem is people live in areas where there's nothing to do for recreation. People that live near National Forests have so much they can do. If you live near the cities you can only go to a movie, restaurant or go bowling. Big deal. Move to where there is recreation and you'll never be sorry. To hell with living near your relatives. I have many relatives, but they never have any get togethers and they never invite you over, so what the hell is the use living near them. Frig the relatives and move to where you can have fun. Riding around, going to bars and drinking beer is the life of a loser.
For North Carolina Residents.....Advise please? Hello!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My family and I are planning to go to North Carolina for a Christmas vacation and we are lost. We want to stay in one of those cabin rentals in the mountains because we are from florida and the highest hill you'll find around here are NONE....We want to ski, visit the smokey mountains, kayak, or water rafting, fish, visit the line that divides Tennessee from NC, and horse back ride. We would also like to visit the Baltimore house and the smokey mountain park. Can you please tell me the exact name of the area where i will be able to find all of these...even if it means that we have to drive a bit from place to place. But at least have the opportunity to do all these things while in there. I tried looking online but they give so many names like, ashville, and Charlotte, and some others and i am confused. Please help and advise me of where to stay and other attractions i haven't mentioned that are worth doing while in there. Please help me. Thank You very much.
Windsurfing, Kitesurfing, and Kayaking? I'm actually starting to get an itch for extreme water sports (no fishing lol) and I've ran into Windsurfing, Kitesurfing, Wakeboarding, and Kayaking. Just so you know where I am to start, I'm in South Florida Miami where the winds usually dont blow very much (but from the vids on Youtube, people have managed to do the above) anyway, I was woundering what's the best one to get into for the best price and what might I be paying for any? From what I've read, Kite: $$$ = Kite , $ = Board Wind: $ = Sail , $$$ = Board and I've seen Windsurfing packages for like $1500 and Kitesurfing kites for like $900 no board! Can I get into anyone of these with like $1000 and build on what I have using peices of the old equipment? Is there anything cheaper? Or should I stick with Kayaking ($250 for the one I'm looking at)?

Cheap, preferably free, outdoor activities to do in Orlando? I am a college student at the University of Central Florida. I really like this girl who loves outdoor activities (kayaking, hiking, fishing, white water rafting, skydiving, you name it... she's done it). I want to take her to a really fun place where we can enjoy some outdoor activities together. Keep in mind, we are both VERY tight on money. Any suggestions?

I went fishing at the Florida keys for shark, with mullet as bait.(din't catch shit)Why? I just went fishing at the Florida keys, and I catch jacks, bluefish, grunts, cuberas and more. But my goal was to bring a shark home, I was fishing next to a bridge at the beach I used as bait a frozen mullet that i bought from a bait shop. I hooked the mullet with a wire and two hooks on. I throw it with out a weight and far as my rod can. I wait about an hour and a half, and nothing came. Please could you help me telling me what i did wrong or what i need to improve? But I think that if I get a kayak and i go farther, and throw my bait there I will get something.
Spring Break vacation in cape coral or daytona beach florida? What are some fun things to do in either place? My family is trying to decide whether to go to Daytona beach or Cape Coral and for anyone whos ever been to either. Which one is better for things like kayaking, finding shells on the beach, natural beauty, fishing, beaches etc. Thanks!
Some florida inshore questions? Im driving down to florida with hopes of a nice mixed bag, im bringing a 9 weight fly rod, a 13ft heavy with a daiwa Df100 giant spool reel, a 13ft med spin, an 8 ft mh spin, an 9'5" medium conventional, an ambassadeur baitcaster with an 8 mh rod, a 6 ft m baitcaster, and some 6' med spin rods, is this a good all around set up to let me fish just about anything i want? ideally ill be hitting the beach with a kayak, (hence the conventional) as well as wading out into the flats, i deff want to get a med size shark, and fish for reds and trout and the like, is this good? also whats a good general line setup? i was thinking on the smaller rods 20lb mono with a 50lb fluro leader and 50lb braid on the heavy rods? Im gonna paddle out the conventional but cast the surf rods
Why can I still not catch sharks? Okay so I live in Florida and am new to shark fishing, I have yet to catch my first shark or even get a bite yet and I'm not sure why, http://www.tx-sharkfishing.com/shark-fishing/shark-fishing-leaders/ I followed these exact instructions on making my leader. I use horse mullet cut in half for bait although I am going to make double hook leaders so I can use whole mullet, I want to use ladyfish but have a hard time finding them... but anyways I kayak my bait a good 300-400 yards out from beaches and leave them there for hours before checking on them and have yet to receive any action... I do this around sunset as well.. Can you offer any advice to a novice sharker? Also I am going for sharks in the 4-10 foot range and I have a setup that can handle it.
What to pack for Florida? I am staying a week in Ellenton, FL, with my great grandmother who lives in a elderly community. We are going to be going to Sarasota, FL for excursions. By my great grandmothers house, there is a small lake (Manatee Lake) with lots of fish, ducks & ducklings and tall crane birds (and some others). Inside the house there is a small sunroom (two couches, a chair, table and a little bit of open space), my great grandmothers bedroom, a small room with a small wheeling bed, which has a small bathroom table outside of a closed door shower/toilet/sink room. Then there is a small kitchen, next to a small little living room with a couch, chair and coffee table. There is also a screen room where you can sit, or get to another room other than having to walk through the house. There is the same thing in the sunroom. I also want to include that the max. temp is about 104F/40C and the min. temp is 86F/30C, because we are going in the summer. I am a female traveler. My accommodation is Friends/family. I will be with my grandparents so no other children will be attending. It may rain (it is sunny sometimes, then it rains with the sun still shining. Florida's strange like that!) during my stay. I will definetely use a suitcase, but depending on if I take more I might use a large/medium backpack. I will definetely bring my own camera, but I might bring an underwater one as well. We also will probably be eating out during our stay but if not I will cook/make my own food. Activities include trekking on the beach, snorkeling, swimming, boating, and maybe kayaking our scuba diving. My transportation is by car. My suitcase is very big, and my backpack is too. Please write what you think I should bring like this.. LOL, I know, I'm picky... Example: Shorts (-number of pairs here-) Thanks to everyone! :-)

Packing for Flo-rida, please help? Salwater fishing with 30LB test with Abu Garcia Cardinal 104i? I'm taking a trip to florida, and I'm doing a day of saltwater kayak fishing. Were fishing for snook, tarpon, and redfish. I was told by the guide to have a bite tippet of 30lb floro. Can i use my freshwater reel for this? If not, what would you recommend thats under 100 bucks? the gear ratio is 5:1:1, the spool capacity (braided) is 14 lbs (210 yds), and max drag is 14 lbs.
Outdoor things to do in Miami Florida? Going on a fishing trip to florida for a week in february. Just wondering if anyone knows any good outdoor activities/ companies. We have 2/6 days booked on fishing charters, and 4 of the are up in the air. Things like, party fishing boats, canoeing, kayaking, sea food restaurants, places that will cook our catch and anything interesting really.
Going to key west with friend...? Going to key west with a friend...? My best friend (who happens to be gay) and I are going to key west in may. We plan to go on a fishing tour and do a kayaking tour of the keys. Although, I don't see anything wrong about going to Florida with my gay friend others have made comments. They have basically said that key west is a huge gay community and key west is not for non-couples. I'm happy engaged with my girlfriend and have no interest in other... Is it wrong to go with my friend and if I go will i have as much fun as I thought I would?
